Whatever You Do

Today’s to-to list is enormous and overwhelming… like normal.
This morning’s verse from a dear friend was this: “Whatever you do, do your work heartily as to the Lord, and not to men…” – Colossians 3:23
I can hear my children’s groans (along with the strains of a march-like tune I gave them for these words) whenever we faced a day of room-cleaning. I have never been a good housekeeper. And I, therefore, never succeeded in teaching them how to do it. No one has died from my housekeeping, but it will not appear neither in House Beautiful… nor will we be featured on “American Hoarders.”
Each of them has figured it out, or married someone who does it well, but Mama… she still struggles with it. The reasons are tangled and not really my concern here. The motivation for it is!
As a follower of Jesus in the everyday, my focus must be on my Master’s path through this day. I don’t know exactly what that is or where it goes, but I must keep His heels in my sights: I must keep seeking His heart for the people in my sphere, His supply for the feeding and care of my family, His purposes for the spaces and soil of my realm, His delight in my decorating and celebrating, His priorities in my choices.
I do not always succeed; in fact, I often fail. I can easily get wrapped up in how the living room looks, when how I can care for the hearts sitting there is His concern. I can fuss over whether the dishes are done, when His priority is the trees I need to prune for fruitfulness or feed for beauty. It is never cut-and-dried, because He is the Ever-Living One. Yesterday’s desires may not be today’s. “Detours” may be the route du jour. Interruptions may actually be Him breaking in!
I cannot afford to let “The List” rule; only Jesus is King!
Following Jesus every day in the everyday,
Christi
