What’s in a Name?

Nehemiah’s job it is to see to it that no one poisons the king through his wine, tasting every goblet that is offered to the sovereign. (This is some high level security clearance, as well as a high risk job, and his boss is not even a Jewish king.) In response to the news that his people back in the province of Judah were not doing well, he’s been fasting, praying, mourning and weeping for days, and making a decision about what he is going to ask the king for.
He’s finally ready to bring a request to God: “O Yahweh God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let the prayer of your servant that I now pray… O Adonai, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name.” There’s more to this prayer, but I was struck by the lack of “I,” “me,” and “mine,” and by the formality in His request. Here is a man who understands how to address royalty! It made me wonder if there should be more formality in my conversations with the Almighty. This kind of language certainly promotes reverence! I mean, He is in charge! He is the Creator of all that is created! The King of all kings…but He is also my Papa-God; Jesus told us to call Him “our Father in heaven,” and to come to Him as children. Most human fathers would be concerned if their children addressed them so formally.
Since we are His stewards, should we call Him “Boss,” and submit prayer request forms or work orders in triplicate, or Bcc all the heavenly host?
He is our Shepherd…How do you make “Baaa baaa” a formal address? And how can a masterful work of art speak at all to the Artist?
He is also the Bridegroom, and I can’t think that a newly-wed fellows would enjoy being spoken to by his bride all the time like Nehemiah spoke to God.
The writers of the Psalms called Him “my Fortress,” “our dwelling place,” “God of vengeance,” “Judge of all the earth” and more.
The bottom line is that our relationship with God is a developing, multi-dimensional, dynamic life together! There are times I need Him to be my Rock, my Place of Refuge, and there are times I need Him to be my Papa who carefully, painfully disciplines me for my good. The forms of address express how vast is His care and engagement with us.
I invite you to address Him according to your need. He calls you by name; feel free to do the same! What will you call Him today? I am calling Him Path-maker as I am
Following Jesus every day in the everyday,
Christi
