Tales from the Cooped

This morning I opened the door to the chicken tractor expecting the usual squawk and dash from my tiny flock. None of them moved a muscle. No one made any noise.
It was later than normal, and they were abnormally quiet. I lifted up the roof to check on them and not one did any more than blink!
“What is going on?” I wondered.
I waited.
Suddenly a flock of Inca doves burst from the top of our palo verde tree, and swiftly thereafter, I saw the source of my hens’ unusual behavior: a majestic Cooper’s hawk soared overhead, wheeling among the smaller birds. They all flew away south and out of sight. (The Cooper’s hawk is one of only three species that consider other birds prey!) Having recognized the risk of an overhead predator, the chickens demonstrated a lot of wisdom!
When in danger, stay under protection and be still!
I realized then that there was a deeper truth at work.
God tells us that He is our Refuge, our place of safely, and He tells us to be still and know that He is God, our Refuge. There is no better place to be when I recognize danger of any kind — especially spiritual danger — than waiting quietly in the shelter of the Almighty!
Guess I’d better pay closer attention to my chickens! And stay closer to my Refuge as I am…
Following Jesus every day in the everyday,
Christi
