Summer Journal Excerpts

Speechless in the blessed music of rain!
Thank You.
Thunder rumbles – a long, low growl over my head from west to east.
Palm trees roar in the wind and bow to the force of You — bent but not broken as the giant grasses they are!
The leaves make tiny rounds of applause in thanksgiving.
Dead things break and fall.
Thirsty things sigh.
Humble things soak up blessing.
Proud things snap.
Sheltered by the house and the porch, the long roll of stratospheric timpani poses no threat.
Thank You for joint braces, thank You for space, time and temperature to spend with You. Please guide my thoughts today as I counsel, write, disciple, lead, teach and listen.
Cooking pancakes on the porch. It’s so humid the mosquito coil struggles to smolder. The temperature has dropped from miserable to bearable as a little rain begins its leafy music, accented by the mellow alto windchimes. The flies are sticky, clingy. We’ve had enough rain that the fuzzy fig leaves have a bit of a shine.
Now there is a breeze…and thunder — the long rolling cloud to cloud kind. A disoriented woodpecker keeps trying to land on a metal pole!
I am surrounded by evidence of Your care: the stack of sour-milk pancakes on the stove behind me, the fig tree (grown from a stick) that yields half a dozen fruit each day, the volunteer watermelon plant in the middle of the yard, the edible weeds (purslane) in the garden, first year peaches from an orchard volunteer, another volunteer tree (peach or nectarine) growing in the vegetable bed, dozens of bunches of grapes, bagged and ripening or raisin-ing on the roof, air conditioning and an outdoor stove. (The Hub has retrofitted an old gas range to run on propane.)
My Father, how good you are!
This is why I am…
Following Jesus every day in the everyday!
