Seeking His Righteousness in another setting
Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be yours as well. — Matthew 6:33
First, I must apologize for failing to get a post out last week. I take my (self-imposed) deadlines seriously, and had started a post but ran out of time to complete and schedule it before I left the country.
I was in Mexico last week with nineteen teenagers, ministering in the communities surrounding Ejido Sinaloa, outside of Mexicali. (This is not exactly an “everyday” experience, but occasionally following Jesus in the everyday includes some not-so-everyday events.)
I got a peek into what seeking God’s kingdom first looks like in another setting. Those I met who follow Jesus in the everyday exuded hope and joy in the face of crushing poverty and debilitating health challenges: they grew flowers in inside-out tires, nurtured the herbs and blossoms of tiny kitchen gardens, hung spotlessly hand-scrubbed clothes from wires, cherished trees, joyfully worshiped God together in buildings without doors or windows while goats and sheep bleated just outside, sang and prayed with fervor in a cramped one-room building painted in vivid colors.
Our team was grateful to be able to distribute some food boxes, provided by our home church, play games with and bring dramatized Bible stories and activities to children, and share worship songs and reports of God’s work in our lives — all for the building up of the body of Christ.
We were all seeking God’s kingdom and His righteousness; being able to express beauty and joy is a confirmation that the promises of God are being fulfilled.
Even if what we have does not seem like enough, God’s promise is that, as we seek Him, what we need will be supplied…and sometimes that is the ability to make do with less. *
Pursue God’s kingdom and enjoy being cared for by a Father who notices all the little things!
