Seeking His Kingdom (part 5)

What it should look like!

Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be yours as well. -Matthew 6:33

My commitment is to follow Jesus every day in the everyday…So, how shall I think about Jesus as the King over my food choices? Does it matter? Why would He care? Should I?

I like Leviticus. (Feel free to groan and roll your eyes…It’s weird, I know.)  It is commands to those who served as priests in the tent of encounter and, later, in the temple. The detail it contains shows just how intimately involved God wanted to be in the lives and affairs of those who most strongly represented Him to His people and to the nations. He covers everything from the kind of fabrics they could wear to whom they could marry and where they should poop, from the combinations of animals used to do farm work to how to tell if someone is lying to his or her mate, and very extensively, what they should and shouldn’t eat.

Let that sink in a minute.

God cares enough about His people that He gives dietary instructions. And it’s not the first time! (Check it out for yourself.)

I am not going to start anything about what kind of things everyone should or shouldn’t eat. My point here is that God does care about what is on my plate, because it is an intimate, regular part of my life.

What, when, and how much I eat speaks very clearly about the state of my heart.

If I “eat my stress,” I am giving evidence that I am not living with Jesus as my Prince of Peace.

Standing in front of the open pantry when I am not physically hungry may serve as an open book on the state of my heart…

If my choices are motivated by barely restrained self-indulgence, the ruler-ship of my heart is pretty apparent. Since He calls us a kingdom of priests, His representatives in the world, the ruler-ship of my heart matters a great deal!

I don’t have this figured out, I just know it is something that bears consideration…so I’m considerin’!

Let me know what you are thinking about seeking His kingdom first on your dinner plate.

Following Jesus every day in the everyday,

Christi
