Seek His Kingdom: the Patchwork of My Days

Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be yours as well.   -Matthew 6:33

When someone asks me what I do, I don’t know how to answer. It depends on the week, on the day, on the time of day…

I tried to get a visual on what my weeks look like, so I found a big presentation board left over from someone’s high school days and got out the big stack of multi-colored Post-It notes. Using one color for each kind of activity or event I began write on each one something I expected to do, one for prayer-counseling, another for tutoring, a third for meals and meal planning, one for blogging and music production. I placed them on the board in seven columns – one for each day of the week. Some were split for alternating weeks. Others didn’t fit where I thought they should. Pink next to yellow, beside green and blue, sometimes two pinks together or alternating like a barber pole.

There were things that just didn’t fit…even though they needed to…but I was not free to cancel. And then there are the emergencies. Someone gets sick, has car trouble, needs a phone call, or groceries.

Some days I look at what is on the calendar and just sigh because there is no way I can get it all done.

I can freak out, raise my blood pressure and my voice, or I can take refuge in the verse that is mine for 2019: Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be yours as well. Jesus is specifically referring to what we eat or wear, but based on the other things He says not to worry about, I understand Him to mean that whatever we need for daily life will be seen to as I chase after God and His reign as my priority.

I guess I could tell that first enquirer that what I do is follow God around, working with Him to increase His kingdom. So especially when my calendar looks like a patchwork quilt, I know I can trust Him to order my schedule and to provide strength, wisdom…and cancellations…according to His design.

Still following Jesus every day in the everyday!

P.S. Where do you see Him keeping His promises in your everyday?
