Our Every-Day God

Usually when we say “everyday,” we mean common, ordinary, run-of-the-mill, and that is certainly what I intend when I talk about following Jesus in the everyday:  dishes, laundry, gardening, family relationships, church stuff. When Jesus was introducing His hearers to the Kingdom of God the way God sees it, He used everyday customs, objects and activities: farming, animal husbandry, house-keeping, party-throwing, weddings and funerals. (Our 21st century western culture has diverged enough from those things that many bear some explaining before we can understand what He is saying.)

But, when I speak of our every-day God, I am not relegating Him to the same status as the delivery truck driver. (Tell me you don’t see those guys every day…) I am declaring one of His great glories: His faithfulness!

Here are some samples of what I am talking about:

His mercies are new EVERY morning. (Lamentations 3:23)

He brings out the constellations EVERY night. (Isaiah 40:26)

He makes a covenant with EVERY living creature. (Genesis 9:14-16)

He provides water to EVERY beast . (Psalm 104:10-11)

He will bring EVERY deed to judgment. (Ecclesiastes 12:14)

He will supply EVERY need according to His riches. (Philippians 4:19)

He disciplines EVERY child of His because of His love. (Hebrews 12:6)

There are so many more EVERYs about our God! He is dependable, comprehensive, reliable, eternal, unchanging, and unchangeable! No matter what we are doing, where we are going, whom we are with, or what our plans for the future are, He’s got it covered! Wherever we are, He is there. Every day in our everyday, God is present and active (sounds like a grammar lesson) neither absent nor passive, worthy of our trust and ready to comfort, heal, forgive, and bring justice!
