No One Takes It from Me

It had been a terrible morning. I had not dealt well with a child in the throes of the “terrible twos.” I had gotten very angry, lost control, been very harsh…violent, even.
My intention had been to attend a gathering were my guilty, angry, wounded heart was fed truth and hope on a regular basis. It always helped me to be better…at least for a little while. But I had a two-year-old with different ideas. I do not even remember all I did anymore, but the echo of my guilt still resounds as I remember that day.
At my husband’s suggestion, I fled (without children) to Canaan in the Desert, where I had intended to go that morning.
There, in the Garden of Jesus’ Sufferings and Resurrection, I encountered Jesus in a new way.
I sat on the stone bench before the relief of Jesus being flogged with the cat-o-nine-tails, wounded in every part of His body. I was overcome by the suffering He endured, knowing it was because of my sin.
“Look what my sin cost You! How can you love me when I made You go through so much?!” I wept.
Into the sobs and the stillness He spoke. “Every lash I take is a sign of My love for you. No one takes it from Me! I lay it down for you!”
His words had a melody and a rhythm. His love is the reason for His suffering. After years of religious practice, I finally experienced His love for me, and my hard, self-righteous heart began to break and melt with love for Him.
May you experience His love through this song that grew out of that encounter, beautifully orchestrated by Andy Chacon.
