Like a Weaned Child

I do not occupy myself with thing too great and too marvelous for me. But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother… Psalm 131:1b-2a
I hate not being listened to.
I resent not being asked for my input, especially when it comes to my medical care.
I dislike it so much that I was angry for a whole week before I recognized it for what it was…and that was not without the Holy Spirit’s help through a troubling dream. My blood pressure was through the roof. (I don’t usually have hypertension.) After talking to my P.A. about the situation, it was higher than before!
Please understand, years ago I was an intensely angry person…all the time! God has come to my rescue and healed much of what drove that. More recently, as I have relinquished more and more of my supposed “rights,” I have been more sensitive to a loss of peace. Fretting over other drivers, fuming about mechanical mishaps and even just irritability over mistakes in communication have been neutralized when I recognized my “rights” being ignored and surrendered them to Jesus.
This was different. A whole week full of bitter speech, tension, gossip about the offense went by before I even began to question it. I even assumed I had the right to spread this bad attitude. Yikes! So much for a “spotless Christian witness,” if there ever was such a thing!
Turns out I was holding on to my “right” to know or at least be told everything I need to know.
How’s that for arrogance?
This expectation had been part of my life since I was small child…that and the fear of not knowing everything I need to know has propelled much of my study and research. So, the desperate need to know everything I might need to know collided with the black hole of not being heard. The explosion deafened everyone I talked to for a week…including my own heart.
Jesus says if we want to come to Him we must come as little children…trusting, humble, knowing we don’t know enough to run our own affairs.
So my prayer today is “Jesus, teach me to trust and rest in the Father’s care like a weaned child, leaning on her mother’s breast, content to just be a child and be near, like You did.”
Following Jesus every day in the everyday…sitting in the Father’s lap with Jesus.
