How Are You Today, God?
Seems like a silly question.
I mean, really…He never changes, right?
It’s true, but He also is living, not a static entity, and that means He is responsive. Scripture tells us that His heart breaks, He rejoices over repentant sinners, He has wrath which is not always being poured out or exercised. The core of who He is does not ever change, but His emotions are responsive — the result of what He is thinking, like ours are.
Maybe it’s the paradox of immense and intimate, infinite and measured, power and gentleness. Perhaps my lack of grasp is rooted in the concept that since we can’t comprehend all He is, He only (graciously) shows us bits, each one what each one needs at the moment…
He will never cease to be Maker of Heaven and Earth, but “who” I see may be the Commander of Heaven’s armies or the One crushed under the load of my guilt, or the One who laughs at a silly joke. He does not change, but what I see of Him does.
Insects have compound eyes, receiving multiple inputs at once to help them stay alive and find food, multiple facets to look at one large scary world. We are used to processing the world from the top of the food chain; we have stereo vision for depth perception, but too many inputs for too long makes us dizzy. He is the God who is so great, vast, wise that He can only be properly seen through multiple inputs! We need more eyes than our own to see Him!
We have sixty-six books, with forty or so authors, and a cast of millions to introduce us to Him. It is His Spirit who alone can help us to become acquainted with Him. It is the job of the Spirit of Revelation, the Spirit of Truth to give us what we need in order to KNOW the Godhead. Without His empowering the relationship, trying to get to know Him is a philosopher’s jigsaw puzzle with many pieces blacked out. This is why we must approach Scripture with the intent to know Him, because even knowing what it SAYS is not enough.
I want to know Him, the fellowship of His sufferings and the power of His resurrection as I am…

I have been a Christian for about 22 years and still I want to know Him. I am just realizing this that I have known of Him but do not know Him. I want to know Him so badly. I don’t understand how others seem to get to know Him and I do not.

Dear Peter,
You are not alone in having information about God without really being acquainted or in relationship with Him.
Is there something you know about Him that makes you uncomfortable? This is often a place He desires to connect with you. Listen for the response He desires from you.
Is there an area you are aware of where you hold Him “at arm’s length” unwilling or unable to be vulnerable with Him? Surrender the attempt to control your interactions with Him, being as honest as you can with Him.
He already knows all about you, and loves you more than you can imagine.
