God makes a stunning commitment to Samuel: He did not let a single word from Samuel’s mouth “fall to the ground.”
Reading this yesterday, my response was to pray, “Let none of my words ‘fall to the ground,’ but keep my aware of them so that they will bear fruit, like Yours.”
What was I thinking? How arrogant! We expect this kind of certainty from God’s mouth, His words, but ours?
And yet, without me realizing it, He did just that…at least in one circumstance.
I chat regularly with a woman who is a single mom of a special needs child. The challenges she faces are many and varied. The reality of being the child’s sole participating parent often weighs heavy on her. Sometimes I have wisdom to share and sometimes I got nothin’!
This week, as she was making me aware of some of her current difficulties, I remembered that Scripture has declared God to be a father to the fatherless. I asked if she understood what that means. As she was answering, I was diving into my Bible search engine for where that statement is located. I found it in Psalm 68, where God’s victory over His enemies is proclaimed; this victory includes home and family relationships for those who are alone, protection from and triumph over people who are against us, provision of our needs (rain for crops and offspring of livestock). All she knew of God as Father to her fatherless child was of guidance and “headship,” whatever that means… She was stunned at the breadth and depth of God’s care for those without fathers. It caused a paradigm shift in her thinking.
It was only last night with my small group of teens, as we were sharing how an aspect of God’s greatness affected us personally, that I realized that God, in His omniscience (all knowing) provided both the guidance and the words that she needed, without me having any idea of how much difference these words would make. He is so great and so good; join me in praising Him!
