Unexpected Grief

Published by christi on

Grief is funny stuff…not funny-humorous, but funny-quirky, unexpected, unlooked for.

This morning I noticed my mother’s ring on the window sill in the kitchen. It rests on the neck of a little, clear-glass bird (a gift from my late sister-in-law) made for just such a purpose. My mother’s knuckles were so enlarged from arthritis and hard work that this ring that fit her slid right over my own simple gold band. Tears and whimpering followed. As if out of nowhere, I was flooded with grief.

Maybe it’s because I am dealing with another kind of grief that she often felt:  the grief over a life poured out for others that seems to be for naught, the grief for a life lived in misery and destruction because of unwillingness to take responsibility for choices.

Our enemy would like us to blame others for everything that is amiss in our lives. I don’t think he even minds if we blame him, he just wants us to not walk into the light where God dwells!

Light brings healing! (Think laser surgery)

Light cleanses! (Sunshine is a great germ killer!)

Light reveals! (Ever try to find a pair of socks in the dark?)

Mom was not perfect, but she earnestly pursued the Jesus she loved, the One she knew loved her most and best. She fought on her knees and with her life to rescue those she cared about.  And I find myself very much in her company today. And wishing for hers.

Only Jesus can rescue. And He will not rescue us over our objections. He will not press His advantage.

He is willing, but He waits for us to be.

Praying for a willing heart even in my grief as I am

Following Jesus every day in the everyday,

Christi
