Everyday Trouble

I love Psalm 107.
It’s just so…comforting, I guess. It starts with the command to express thanks to God for His enduring faithfulness. What comes next are four scenarios of people in trouble:
–trouble because of what God is doing to bring them out of exile,
–trouble because their rebellion has landed them in bondage and slavery,
–trouble because their rebellion and disobedience has resulted in sickness and disease, and
–trouble caused by natural (ahem, God-generated) disasters while in the course of doing business.
(Pretty much whatever kind of trouble I am in falls into one of these categories.)
In each case, when the people in trouble holler for help from the LORD, they get rescued from their distress as He leads them to safety or out of their dark prisons, heals them or stops the storm He has sent. The expected response is to praise God for His great love.
Every day I have choices to make; every day I have the consequences of my choices, plus the challenges of how I will respond to what God has chosen for my day. Not every storm in my life is the result of my disobedience, some are the everyday struggles of an exile. No one who belongs to Jesus belongs here in this world. Living as a citizen of the Kingdom of Light while residing in the kingdom of darkness is painful by its very nature; we don’t fit. We stub toes and bark shins.
There are days when normal activities draw my focus away from the One I desire to follow, and Papa-God may stir up a storm to get my attention.
Then there are the times when I have given my old dragon-man the upper hand, and the sickness of my heart and my body are my own fault. I can lapse into depression and despair, self-recrimination and condemnation and try to punish myself out of them. (Show of hands if you’ve tried that one.) Or I can fall in helpless trust on His faithful love. In either case I have found, along with the songwriter, that God’s faithful love is the one thing that will not be taken from me…and His love triumphs.
“Those who are wise will take all this to heart;
they will see in our history the faithful love of the LORD.”
