Checking in with Papa

Published by christi on

Jesus says He never did anything without His Father.

“I only speak what I hear the Father saying.”

“I only do what I see the Father doing.”

“I can do nothing apart from my Father.”

If any other human said that, psychology would say he’s got co-dependence issues and needs to self-actualize. Yet, His example is precisely how God wants me to live: in absolute surrender to and complete dependence on Him.

Even if I have written words of surrender and submission in my morning journal entry, I am likely to look at my to-do list, sigh with resignation at the size of it, and start frantically wondering how in the world am I going to get it all done…

I have done the “present your list before the Lord in the morning” thing, asking God to do whatever He wants with it. I present it all right, but then I quickly grab whatever is pressuring me or whatever I think I can actually accomplish, and dig in. I forget whose I am. I push as hard as I can, and fall into bed at night frustrated that I didn’t get more done.

Fail.

I have written a prioritized list…and started at the bottom, because the list starts with what I am obligated to do and ends with what I actually want to do. And you know where that takes me…

Also, fail.

Because it is so easy to forget the One who has written my days in His book before there was one of them, I now have set an alarm on my phone with a half-hour snooze labelled “Check in with Papa.” The plan is to do just that, every 30 minutes: take a moment to be quiet and receive direction from my Papa-God. “Should I keep on with what I am doing? Is there something else You want me to do right now?” Even in the midst of a scheduled event, I need to be reminded to seek my Father’s direction, power and peace.

So…my alarm is set. So far, it has helped me to rely on Him more, and I have more peace, and end up feeling better about what I have accomplished. I will let you know how it goes from here.

I can do nothing apart from my Father.

P.S. A new song will be coming out soon! I’ll keep you posted.
