Be Exalted!
Be exalted, O God, above the heavens! Let your glory be over all the earth!
–Psalm 57:5 (and 11)
David’s cry of praise is in the midst of real trouble! Storms of destruction, being trampled, people whose words are sharp swords and vicious teeth! In the middle of his danger and difficulty, David’s response is to make melody to the Lord in response to God’s steadfast love and faithfulness, His refuge for His people. God does not change. The circumstances around us may waver, structures may crumble, those we thought we could trust may betray us or abandon us, but God is faithful and cannot be moved.
We can trust both His love and His justice. His practice of theses is never tarnished or flawed. We may not see it right away. It may appear that there will never be reward for the just nor retribution for the wicked, but that is only because we are short-lived and short-sighted. Thankfully, our perceptions are not the measure of reality.
We may be falsely accused or slandered. God always knows the truth and will bring about justice, on His timetable. We may be justly accused, it is God who justifies us and gives us our right standing before Him; we are never morally pure on our own account. It is trust in Jesus and clinging to what He has done for us by taking our sentence of death in our place that grants us that upright status in God’s accounting.
No matter what our circumstances, God is worthy to be praised! Join me in this song. Make up your own tune, but let your heart join mine in asking that He be known as He truly is all over the earth!
Be exalted! In the middle of my mess.
Be exalted — in the depth of my distress.
I put my trust in You. There’s nothing I can do
But fly to You. I cry to You! Be exalted!
In the pit that’s been dug for me,
Where the lions growl and bare their teeth,
I cry out in my doubt.
Hear my shout: Be exalted!
I want You to be glorified, made plain for all to see
So do Your work in me.
