Advent: Celebrating His Plan

When I think of a plan, it might be a blueprint for an addition to my parents’ house, it might be a calendar grid populated with menu ideas, it might be a flow-chart for ministry processes…but these things are all comprehensible, human-brain-sized, linear, and chronologically time-oriented. Recently, I have been personally struggling with the implications of His plan for the Church:

But now God has placed each one of the parts in one body just as He wanted. 1 Corinthians 12:18

This has to be one of the more challenging verses in scripture, especially when God places certain people in my life that make it difficult. Yet His gracious sovereignty plans for my transformation through “each one of the parts.” I ask Him to give me His love for the difficult ones He wanted to place in my life. I am pretty sure I am a difficult one, too, because He has placed so many challenging people in my life to knock off MY less-than-lovely parts! It’s actually a little discouraging to realize that is the case. Anyone I determine is the “weaker one” is therefore more necessary for my transformation!

But even more, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are necessary. 1 Corinthians 12:22

How I thank Him for putting the Body of Christ together in His wisdom. No human mind can craft such a masterpiece, perfectly suited to be wed to the Fairest of the Sons of Men, the Ruler of All.

We, the weakest, wed the Strongest.

We, the empty, You now fill.

We, unseemly matched, in wisdom,

with the Fairest of the sons of men.

You, sufficient, woo the lacking.

You, who fills all, floods the dry.

You, the Life that grows by dying,

leaves no death unturned.

As I approached the Advent season this year, I asked Papa-God what would bring Him joy for us to celebrate during these days before Christmas.

His answer: “My plan.”

“You may not see what I am doing, but I do. It is good.

You will like it. You will clap your hands and dance in wonder when you see it! I can hardly wait!

I love it when  you delight in My handiwork. It brings Me joy and comfort.”

The hinge-point of God’s great plan is the manger where the centuries of faithful planning and promise-keeping began to be fleshed-out, literally! On my face before the manger I see the open spine of a book. The left pages are history and hints; the right are fulfillments and future!

What a plan! What a planner! in delight and awe I continue
