About My Garden…

Published by christi on

My garden…yeah, about that… My Asian yard-long beans are climbing and blooming, but not bearing. My okra is beautiful and growing, but not blooming. The oregano and mint are threatening to take over the planet! Almost the only things out there I can eat are the weeds! The point of growing a garden is to participate with God in supplying our needs, right?

A fungus is threatening the life of my faithful apple tree, and about to finish off our beautiful volunteer nectarine tree.  My lovely rotating barrel composter bit the dust when the steel pipe that runs through the middle of it rusted out, so the unfinished compost had to get dumped on the empty potato patch.

Did you know you can eat squash sprouts and purslane?

Leaf-hoppers have infected the grapevines with another kind of fungus. The birds have demolished half of the grapes I bagged to protect them from the birds! I planted pumpkin seeds only to have them pulled out and eaten as soon as they came up! One shade tree seems to be dying and the other, a volunteer fruiting mulberry, has to be chopped down and dug up, because it is too close to the house and shading the solar panels.

This is my yard and garden…I can complain about it, or I can put my ear to the ground and listen for what God is saying through all these things. God has always spoken to men from the soil and the sky. Our culture has distanced us from these words by hauling our food from miles away, but God still speaks to us, if we will listen. Sometimes He is offering us an opportunity to express our trust in Him by giving thanks and offering praise in the midst of difficulty.

He never has a Plan B. He never has to take us on a detour. He is always doing things the best way. Our job is to give thanks in everything, give thanks FOR everything, and trust God no matter what.

This is my day to learn to praise the Lord.

This is my day to trust Him whatever comes.

When people say,

“This isn’t your day,”

And things aren’t going my way —

That’s when I say:

“It’s my day to praise the Lord.”

Still learning to follow Jesus every day in the everyday,

Christi
