Tight Times, Fasting and Dependence on God

Apart from our standing with God through Jesus Christ, our future is always uncertain. These days that’s a little more apparent than usual.
The financial world, governments, corporations, neighborhoods are all shaking in the face of an adversary too tiny to be seen with even a powerful microscope! Fear has gripped many of us. Some of us have no income because our employers must close their doors. Some of us have less-than-robust health and are at higher risk of infection. You have seen the news, or read it. It’s not good news! But I have good news for you: God is the King of the Universe! He is All-Powerful, All-Loving and All-Knowing!
What that works out to is: Those who put their trust in Him will dwell secure. That doesn’t mean without trouble or scarcity, free from every disease or health issue. I means that He will see to it that those who belong to Him will make it safely to their destination: home with Him. Those who rely on Him will find that everything that happens to them is woven into a beautiful design that will be the very best thing for them. Those who look to Him for all their needs will find they have the strength to go without so that others can have what they need. Those who depend on Him in every thin spot will find He is thick and strong enough to carry them through.
Even if doing without is not required, the discipline of fasting is good practice for what lies ahead. It exposes our dependency on food for strength. It reveals our need for Him in ways we don’t normally see. If we let it, it can teach us about the power of God to overcome our cravings.
There are different kinds of fasting; not every fast is a complete food fast, but the exercise of saying “no” to things we regularly enjoy can show us places where our “old man” needs to be stilled, and can give us opportunity to experience God being the big that He actually is. It can open our eyes to how He can provide. He is a good, good Father! He will not abandon His children.
Still following Jesus every day in the everyday,
Christi
