New Mercies and Coffee

Published by christi on

Lately I have been enjoying a mixture of spices, coconut milk and maple syrup in my coffee. I have noted that my pain levels seem to be reduced after my morning mug. This comes as no surprise since my mom used coffee for pain relief for many years, having an extreme sensitivity to most medications. My oldest daughter remembers her grandmother’s scent as that of lipstick and stale coffee.

A few days ago I needed a routine blood draw. You know, the kind where you have to fast for eight or more hours…not really a big deal, but this time, I discovered something of the goodness and generosity of God.

My coffee and quiet time with God usually happens around 5:30am, but my lab draw was not until 8am. I was in so much pain that I broke down and took an acetaminophen, which I normally avoid. Even after this the pain continued so much that my focus was nearly non-existent. I made up a cup of my morning joe and put it in the car to drink when I got out of the doctor’s office. Ahh! Swift relief!!! Who knew that that spoonful of spices was such powerful medicine?

Who generously and mercifully cause those spice plants to grow from the earth, and made humans curious to find out what they might do (besides smell really good)?

(Sunday School answer time.)  God did!

A couple weeks ago, my hubby had a little encounter (of the bloody and alarming kind) with an X-acto knife resulting in an injury to his thumb. The wound did not want to close or heal and began to be infected, despite good first-aid practices. He asked if there was some kind of soak I could make up to help with the healing. I prayed for guidance and then brewed some lavender infusion, added salt and a few drops of tea tree oil. He soaked his injured thumb in this hot liquid once a day or so, followed by coverage with a bandage. It is moving nicely toward healing now. In fact, today it looks nearly normal!

Once again, many of the things we need for healing are gifted from His hand!

How thankful I am that our generous and loving God has provided from the earth the things we need both for nourishment and for our healing and pain relief.

All part of God’s new mercies as I am

Following Jesus every day in the everyday,

Christi

Now I understand why coffee makes me feel so much better in the morning than other caffeine drinks. I honestly assumed it was just my imagination.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights into God’s creation.
