Looking for peace

Published by christi on

Sitting on the back porch, enjoying the unseasonably cool weather . . . trying to find peace.

There are more things on my “to do” list than I can possibly get done! Guests coming to sleep in a guest room with no flooring and missing woodwork . . . a 75-minute play to direct that will present the gospel to a hundred or more children . . . laundry . . . dishes . . . family relationships and events (It is May.) . . . vet appointments   . . . recording . . . writing . . . compost to turn . . . potatoes to hill. . . prayer-counseling to do.

My schedule is full of important things…things God has called me to do…even some things I am particularly gifted to do, but the combination has my house teetering on the brink of chaos!

God reminded me of Nehemiah: a man who loved and trusted God deeply; a man in the position of highest trust of the Persian king, Artaxerxes. God had answered the cry of Nehemiah’s broken heart: to have the king’s permission to rebuild Jerusalem’s wall. It was rubble, the neighbors had it in for them, their resources were spread thin, and their courage was waning.

It is in his approach to overwhelming odds and insurmountable difficulties that I find my peace.

He prays, declaring God’s greatness, and he arms the workers: every hod-carrier had a weapon in the other hand, brick-layers had swords strapped to their waists. Spears and bows were passed out with the trowels and plumb lines. Then he encourages the people, “The work is extensive and spread out, and we are widely separated from each other along the wall. Whenever you hear the sound of the trumpet, join us there. Our God will fight for us!”

He did not say, “Hunker down and hide. God will fight for us.”

The battle we are in is not won by being passive. It is won by God when we are willing to engage in it.

So here is my path to peace: Step forward into the battle. God will win it. Ahhhh! Now there’s peace!

Where is your battle? I’d love to join you in it.

Following Jesus every day in the everyday
