Where are my eyes?

So…what if the way I have approached repentance is upside down?

What if being transformed into the likeness of Jesus is not about me listing all my sins, grieving deeply enough over them, coming up with a strategy to distance myself from them and all the situations that provide temptation?

What if it is primarily humble recognition that I have not done well and that who I need is Jesus, who does all things well, and trusting that the way the Father cares for me will include my transformation?

Recently my husband attended a mountain biking clinic . One of the things the instructor emphasized was the question of focus: Where are your eyes? If you are looking at the giant cholla cactus beside the trail, that is likely where you will end up. OUCH!

The writer of the Hebrews tells us that the key to finishing the course we are on is to fix our eyes on Jesus. If I am fixing my eyes on my sin, I will end up back there. If I am fastening my eyes on Jesus, He is where I will find myself. Focusing on my sin, or even on repenting of it, takes my eyes off the One who is worth looking at.

So, if my sin is one of judgment and comparison, turning away from it means turning my focus  to Jesus who is the one I want to be like (and not on my self and sin, nor on the actions or character of others).

In and through all I do…Lord, I look at you!

Following Jesus every day in the everyday!

P.S. If you have been following the leaf-hopper drama, you might be interested to know that God uses life to solve problems: I now have an abundance of lace-wings — beautiful, graceful predatory insects and as a result,  I now have many fewer leaf-hoppers!
