The Myth of Autonomy

Know that the LORD, he is God! It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.
— Psalms 100:3
Autonomy is defined as: the state of existing or acting separately from others. ( Merriam-Webster English Language Learners Dictionary) It is a very popular theme in politics, philosophy, and modern literature. It is also a myth, a clever falsehood designed to create rebellion and discontent.
There is no existence separate from our Maker.
It is God who gives us breath…and something to breathe. We can bottle air, pressurize it to use at sea depths and airliner heights, but we cannot manufacture the air we need. We can pollute it, purify it, compress it, inflate tires or balloons with it, but without it, we can only live a few minutes.
Our health is in His hands also, but cooperating with Him about it seems to be the best idea. We can avoid preservatives and saturated fat, eat organic and stay away from food dyes, but we cannot guarantee that we will not die in a collision with a vehicle that is under someone else’s control, or be certain that the building we call home will not collapse on us.
We are not self-created. We did not acquire our bodies, nor order them to our specifications: blue eyes or green, capacity to sing or to learn, flat feet, long fingers, weak eyes or flexible joints. We have no control over these things. Even excluding divine design, we cannot claim to be the mastermind behind the combination of chromosomes we carry in every single cell of our bodies — all 37 trillion or so of them.
We are designed by God and for Him. No other holds this honor nor right.
I can choose to oppose His rule, but I cannot subvert it. He will not be overthrown.
I must give account to Him who is my Maker. He is my King — my heart, soul, destiny all belong to Him. He has bought me with the most precious substance in the universe. No other could pay or has paid such a price.
I am His.
This is why I am…
…following Jesus every day in the everyday,
Christi
