Salt!

This morning’s post (along with my breakfast) is brought to you by SALT.

Yes, you read that correctly: salt.

Try to imagine the world without salt…can’t do it, can you? No salt water to surf in? No sauerkraut or pastrami?  Chicken without salt? No thank you. It is so essential to life that the ancients used it for money. “Not worth his salt” describes a person whose work is less than satisfactory. An old Russian folk tale proclaims “Salt Above Gold.”

Now imagine Jesus, sitting on a hillside, surrounded by crowds of farmers, potters, basket-weavers and fishermen; those who had recently been healed of all kinds of diseases and disabilities, and those who were waiting for Him to attend to their bigger-than-anybody-can-fix problems and sicknesses; those who lived in fear of no food today, no roof tomorrow; those who knew they were important to nobody and an annoyance to many.

The words from His mouth are stunning: “You are the salt of the earth! If you were to somehow, ridiculously, become not-salty, you would be good for nothing.” (I am sure His audience chuckled here…”Of all the silly things to say.”)

But the good news is: You ARE the salt that is God’s gift to the world.

The world cannot get along without you.

You are irreplaceable.

Your value is beyond measuring.

You are a gift to the whole planet and all of human history.

And a bonus: You just being salty does something good for God: By being the salt that you are, and doing the things you were created to do, you are the lens that lets others see God more clearly and honor Him. Go be the saltiest “you” you can be!

(Read it for yourself in Matthew 5:13,16.)
