Lost Dog (Cooperating with God 2)

The last thing she needed was a mile and a half run!

Her husband was in the hospital. She had just walked in the door after a long day at his bedside when the skittish Boston terrier saw the dark outside and the open door as an invitation to bolt! This was one fast little dog!

“Close the door so the other one doesn’t get out! And throw me my keys!” Adrenaline surged as fear for the pup’s safety grew.

The phone rang: The dog had run toward the canal… instructions about where to send the eighteen-year-old to help.

“Jesus, help them find the dog! Show them where to look. Help us to trust You and not worry,” I prayed, walking the seven-year-old through the waiting.

We talked about admitting we were worried or afraid and then focusing on God’s goodness, power and tender care for us. We were helpless to do anything but trust or worry. (Have you noticed that those two are mutually exclusive?)

We talked together about how dogs don’t worry because they can’t think of the future. (They get anxious when their routine gets interrupted, but have no fear of what lies ahead.) Humans worry because they can think of the future and imagine all the worst things being there. We have peace when we think of the future and know that God is there already, doing His good work, caring for us and our hearts.

The power of fear was broken. Peace settled over us who waited.

The phone rang again. The teenager has the dog. Mom is walking the mile-and-a-half back to the car.

Later, with everyone involved in the drama safe at home, they unpacked the narrative of the hunt.  Both of the searchers had paused to ask the Holy Spirit for instructions. One heard “Go back,” at every inquiry. The other heard “The barn park.” The wily canine was indeed at the barn park, but dashed away when the young mistress spotted her. Finally the dog was cornered at a stranger’s front door. (Ya gotta wonder what the pup was thinking!)

Sometimes following Jesus every day in the everyday means getting His instructions in where and how to catch a runaway dog! He’s just that kind of everyday leader! That’s why I am still…

Following Jesus every day in the everyday,

Christi
