Looking Back to See Ahead
For many years my everyday has included a time with Jesus, usually including coffee, a Bible, and my journal. As a result, I have many, many filled journals. I found an entry from over ten years ago, recounting some events from my past that give me perspective on my present and hope for my future.
I had a flower-girl’s dress to sew for a granddaughter. My sewing machine had a notorious history of failing the moment I really needed it to work. Saturday’s entry included this prayer: Could I please have my sewing machine fixed under warranty or by Divine intervention?
The next morning I wrote:
Thank You! I sewed part of the dress yesterday! On my machine! You are great and Your mercy endures forever. I forgot that I had asked You for it! I’m sorry –I need to give You praise for it working –instead of trying to explain it away.
How much in my life do I explain rather than marvel and worship?
that You gave me parents who fed and clothed me – and saw to it that I was taught about You! What a gift!
that You preserved my life in the womb through my mother’s bout with pancreatic mumps!
that You preserved my life — and my mother’s — in delivery through a Caesarean section! That You had allowed such advances in medicine!
that You kept my father alive during the Depression – that his marvelous brain survived.
that You chose my mother out of her “tribe” as the first-fruits, that You taught her to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit within her.
that You drew them together to the same Bible college.
How wonderful are Your thoughts and plans, O LORD!
How many and unsearchable! I am fearfully made! It is through fearful ways that You have brought me to this place.
You are such a great God that You make glorious use of our flaws and failings.
Papa-God, You are gracious to me: glow to anger, abounding in loving-kindness, forgiving and compassionate.
I need Your graciousness for all You bring across my path.
Just a little slice of my everyday following-Jesus life from yesterday for strength today and hope tomorrow.
May the Lord open your eyes to His miraculous goodness toward you.
