Introducing the Frugal Cooking Guide

(Please accept my apologies for this extra post. This will not happen often.)

As a small child, I listened while Captain Kangaroo (Go ahead: Google it!) read to us the Caldecott Medal-winning book, Stone Soup. This wonderful tale gently reminds us that sometimes what is required to meet an overwhelming need is simply a little imagination and the willingness to share.

This cooking guide is intended to provide a resource for making frugal decisions in the kitchen, no matter what your motivation. Whether the decision to cook more frugally is motivated by a simple desire to balance the household budget, or by the pursuit of obedience to Jesus’ command to lay up treasure in heaven, the way we use our resources reflects our priorities. It is my desire that, armed with some basic principles and freed to use your imagination, you will move beyond, “If it’s Tuesday it must be meatloaf (or McDonald’s),” to “Which country are we visiting around the table tonight?” Or “How much can I save on groceries so I can support my friend who’s bringing Jesus to someone in another culture?”

The principles of frugal cooking are not meant as a straight-jacket but as a pathway to freedom in the kitchen. Stone Soup illustrates, in a very small way, a great principle of frugal cooking: A little food, shared and prepared with some imagination, can feed a large group and bring harmony where there was mistrust and fear. Jesus shows us a similar, but much greater picture of what God through faith can do as He feeds 15,000 people from a child’s sack lunch. Jesus encourages us to look in our cupboards and pantries and ask what God wants us to do with what’s there. You never know. Maybe there’s a miracle hiding in that can of beans…
