Unplanted fruit

Most of what we have eaten from the garden in the last few months came from things I did not plant! Little orange bell peppers, butternut squash, tiny tomatoes, mint for garnish and upset tummies, and everywhere-you-look succulent superfood purslane! All volunteer! I have watered and tended them, picked or sprayed off bugs, and prayed over them, but I did not choose them to grow in my garden. Many of the plants I intended to eat from died, were eaten by other critters, or just did not produce what was hoped for. I wept at the wilt that took my squash and raged at the rat that stripped my harvest. I sighed in disappointment that the corn had scant kernels. And still, we ate from the garden.
God continues exercising His goodness in unexpected ways.
I don’t know why I don’t expect them. My story is full of His provision unlooked for, surprise gifts, overwhelming supply, and boundless grace. My grandchildren enjoy looking through “thankful journals” where we have recorded some details of God’s provision, from spaghetti sauce to tennis shoes, mixers and dishwashers to peanut butter. Blessed from the womb with His favor (as are all who will come to Him) the garden of my life has burst with fruit unasked for…the ability to learn, sing, pray, love and be loved. None of this is from what I have planted, by my choice, but all from His heart.
I can only bow in awe at His love. May you, too, know this wonder in your life!
